Lolita's Personality

Macaws who aren't properly socialized can become aggressive, and can even bite. It is important to have clear boundaries set to ensure that the macaw does feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds who are a joy to play with, interact with, and climb. They require at least 2 to 3 hours per day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, experimenting with tricks and listening to music. They enjoy visiting playgrounds and parks as much as hiking, local restaurants and bars. In addition to being a fun pet they also make wonderful pets for children.
They can be extremely loud, despite their adoration for their mate. They can also be a nuisance to those living nearby. They can be heard making high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which could be a problem in condos and apartments or in close proximity to children who might be startled by their roar.
The species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. Due to this the only way to reliably determine sex is via DNA testing. Once sex is known pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.

Lolita's care
For a long time activists have been lobbying for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's return to the wild, marine biologists hoped Lolita might have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to return to the ocean.
The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also keep her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, pledged to develop an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her eventually to open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary located on the west coast of Washington where she could live for the duration of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who connect with their families until they die. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. The nation's most active activists including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

She has been battling chronic illnesses and a crippling infection that has left her in a fragile condition.
The Miami Seaquarium, now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not provided information about Lolita's present condition. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. These updates show that Toki is aging rapidly and her health is declining.
It is unclear what specific health issues are plaguing the orca, as her captor isn't required to share the information. However, a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a major factor in the death of orcas in captivity.
Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita many believe that she could be closer than ever before to living a wild life. The new owner of Seaquarium has pledged to move the whale out of her tank into her home waters in the Pacific.
After years of public pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean where she can take a deep dive in the ocean and possibly even be reconnect with her orca mother. Unfortunately the plans came too late for the beloved whale, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
